Banana Orange Pear Green Smoothie
Sometimes I really crave a smoothie and not just any smoothie, a healthy smoothie. The other day I was in that mood and I made this Banana Orange Pear Green Smoothie.
The great thing about a smoothie is how easy they are. Basically, if you throw in a little greens like spinach, kale or wheatgrass and combo it with lime or lemon ( the acidity of the lime/lemon, really balances out the bitterness of the greens) and some fruit and you’ll have the basics of an enjoyable green smoothie. We have a Vitamix, which makes smoothie making even simpler. You can just plop in a piece of lime, rind and all, and it purees all the fruit and vegetables perfectly. Our Vitamix is one of my favorite kitchen appliances. I’ve had other blenders, and nothing compares. Because really who wants to chew on pieces of kale or wheatgrass in a smoothie?
But keep in mind if you want to keep your green smoothie bright green, don’t add strawberries, blueberries, blackberries or beets, you’re smoothie might still be tasty but it’ll turn more muddy instead of green. Though if you’re like me, you probably don’t mind because berries are healthy and delicious!
I started making green smoothies about 5 years ago, when juices and smoothies were really starting to gain popularity. My husband and I watched all these healthy eating and juicing documentaries on Netflix and we got really into it for awhile. It’s always a great feeling when you feel healthy. And eating lots of fruits and vegetables and exercising make you feel great! Back then we drank green smoothies at least once a day, now we like to mix it up more. I mean, I love food — cooking and baking— so really a green smoothie everyday for the rest of my life, just wasn’t going to happen. But I want to tell everyone out there who is skeptical (like I was) about enjoying smoothies and juices with fruits and vegetables — they really are tasty. My son, Liam, who’s never liked juice, loves green smoothies. You’d never know that you’re drinking vegetables. It’s awesome!
