Chef’s Salad with Dijon Mustard Vinaigrette
Packed with fresh veggies, eggs, meat and cheese, this Chef’s Salad with Dijon Mustard Vinaigrette is sure to please. This classic American salad is perfect for lunch, dinner or to share at a gathering.
I was inspired to make a chef’s salad this month because June lies right between two patriotic holidays and a chef’s salad just feels so American to me.
Chef’s salad was created just before the Great Depression. It received it’s name because it is thought this dinner salad might be something a chef would quickly throw together on his break. The idea behind a chef salad is wonderful. It’s a delicious meal filled with vegetables and protein from the the egg, cheese and meat. It’s completely versatile — you can mix any greens, vegetables, meat and cheese together, top it with your favorite dressing and voila you have yourself and healthy, hearty meal. No wonder it gained popularity during the Great Depression! A chef’s salad is a great way to not waste any veggies or meat you have leftover.
However, as time passed this popular meal turned into just the opposite. Restaurants started serving chef’s salad with the cheapest ingredients. It became known as a left over salad, where your salad could have consisted of whatever the chef needed to use up.
This is unfortunate because the traditional chef’s salad is so tasty!
It seems in recent years the chef’s salad is over coming it’s bad reputation. And if you think about American history and what it must have been like for people during the Great Depression, you’ll appreciate the salad even more.
So, I created this Chef’s Salad with Dijon Mustard Vinaigrette as a tribute to American history. As Memorial Day recently passed and we’re about to celebrate the Fourth of July, it’s the perfect time to enjoy some classic American food.
If you’re looking for something to bring to a family barbecue this chef’s salad would definitely do the trick. Featuring the traditional veggie, meat, egg and cheese combo all topped with a homemade dijon mustard vinaigrette. Yum! And so simple to make.
If it’s done right, a chef’s salad is so tasty, and pretty. It’ll go along perfectly with a traditional American dessert such as Holly’s Homemade Caramel Apple Pie. So, delicious!
