This Tropical Orange Carrot Smoothie is the perfect summertime breakfast! It’s a wonderfully healthy breakfast to kick start your day. The combo of orange, pineapple and coconut oil transports me to a sunny day at the beach.

But if it isn’t summer and you don’t have the privilege of lounging in the tropics, take a sip of this Tropical Orange Carrot Smoothie and you’ll feel like you’re at the beach. (It’s also a yummy snack.) That’s what I love most about this smoothie. It’s absolutely healthy but doesn’t taste like you’re depriving yourself because it’s so enjoyable.
One of my go to healthy foods is a smoothie. I have a smoothie for breakfast about 3-5 times a week. I find it as a perfect opportunity to get some if not most of the essential vitamins and nutrients in one healthy meal. Plus, it’s so simple, quick and an easy on the go breakfast. I also feel that if I start my day out right I’m more likely to make healthy choices throughout the day.
Like probably everyone, I enjoy “bad” foods. You know the kind — a fluffy and buttery croissant, a delicious fudge brownie, a crispy piece of fried chicken or a big piece of cheesy pizza loaded with all sorts of toppings. Yum! But while I enjoy these delicious foods, eating them everyday would make me one unhealthy person. These foods are what I choose to eat in moderation. They make me happy because they’re just so delicious but they don’t provide all the necessary nutritional content to live a healthy lifestyle. And if eaten everyday they’d make me feel bloated and sluggish. So, these foods I like to enjoy every once in awhile and go all out when I do. Cause really, we only live once so my philosophy is that life is a balance — I want to be healthy, happy and physically fit but every once in awhile I want to indulge and that is totally okay. This is my balance but everyone is different.
Before we had kids, health and fitness just weren’t a priority. But having children really changes your whole perspective on life. We want our kids to leave happy, healthy lifestyles and we want to be around to see our grandchildren or even great-grandchildren, so we decided we needed to become healthier people.
We started working out at home, my husband bought the Beachbody workout T25. We also watched a lot of health and nutrition documentaries and decided to change our lifestyle. It worked! I lost my baby weight and my husband lost weight too. But more importantly we felt better! For the first time in my life I could do 25 push ups in a row without stopping. I was so excited! And my little ones enjoyed it too, I even worked out with my little baby sometimes holding him through the workouts and sometimes he’d just watch. It brought us closer as a family and our children were learning to live a healthy lifestyle too.
Unfortunately, circumstances changed a bit and we stopped our daily workouts. We still ate pretty healthy but not as healthy as we could. So this year we decided to get back on track. We’ve started working out again, together, as a team each morning. Some days it’s tougher than others — like the cold snowy days where all you want to do is cuddle in bed all day. And every now and again we skip a day, but all in all I’d say we’re doing pretty well. The kids have even started doing some kid fitness videos. (They’re totally dated, I feel like I’m being transported to my childhood!) But they love them and they do it together too.
Additionally, we try to enjoy outdoor activities as a family. We like to go to the park, take nature walks or sometimes hike. We homeschool and nature provides so many learning opportunities!
Our kids also enjoy drinking smoothies. Though not everyday, but they are always excited to try a new one. Our son, Liam, really only likes green or chocolate smoothies. Funny thing, I often change up the ingredients but as long as it’s green or chocolate colored it’s always yummy to him. Plus, it’s a great way to sneak in super foods without them knowing. Liam is 5 and just learned that his smoothie often has kale, spinach or wheatgrass. He said, “but I don’t like salad!” But he does in a smoothie 🙂 Kids are so cute!
I made this Tropical Orange Carrot Smoothie because I bought a gigantic bag of organic carrots at Costco. I just couldn’t pass up the deal! But it was a lot of carrots. Usually, we’ve juiced them but currently our juicer is in storage so I figured our Vitamix was up for the challenge. It worked out great! I used Cara Cara oranges — my absolute favorite orange. They’re still in season so if you haven’t tried one yet, I highly recommend you pick up a bunch. They may look like a regular orange but their flesh is pinkish red and they’re citrusy but sweet at the same time with a hint of berry flavor. So juicy and refreshing they’re delicious just to snack on but also make the best smoothies.
One last reason I like this smoothie is because it completely changes things up for me. Usually I make a green smoothie, sometimes red and sometimes chocolate. But for some reason I wasn’t making orange smoothies. From now on I’m going to add this smoothie to my rotation.
While I’ve made lots of smoothie varieties I’ve never made a smoothie bowl. I see them everywhere on Pinterest and Instagram. The pictures are so beautiful. But I’m hesitant because it seems weird to me to eat a smoothie with a spoon. Have any of you made or eaten smoothie bowls? What do you all think of them? Do you have a favorite for a first timer?
